Great product, not-so-great communication

I decided to order a cake topper as a last-minute birthday gift. The birthday was on Monday, and I placed the order the Thursday before. I knew there was a good chance it would be late, but I figured I'd try, and paid a bit extra for above-basic shipping. The website said shipping in 1-2 days, and the shipping distance was less than 250 miles, so I thought maybe the stars would align.

The next day, Friday, I got a notification from the company that the item had shipped. I thought it was my lucky day, and arranged for the cake to be picked up Monday.

Monday arrives, and the cake is picked up. I go to UPS.com to see what time the topper will arrive, only to find that UPS says they have created a label, but have not actually received the order yet. So while I was told on Friday that it had shipped, it still had not shipped on Monday.

I email the company to ask for an estimate for when it will ship. I hear back on Tuesday, when I'm told to wait a few days. I asked them to please inform me when it has shipped.

Wednesday afternoon, it finally arrives. By then the cake was two days old, and had not been able to be refrigerated due to lack of space. Thankfully, it was still in decent shape, but had I known the topper had not shipped on Friday as I was told, I would have asked the baker to delay baking it.

On the plus side, the topper tasted and looked good. I have no complaints about the quality of the topper. I just wish the company had been honest about when they shipped it, so I could have planned better. Also, the UPS tracking shows that the topper was not received by UPS until after 1am Wednesday. UPS delivered it less than 13hrs after they received it, which I thought might happen given how close the destination was. Which means the topper took 4 business days for the company to ship, not their 1-2 day claim.

I understand I'm partly to blame for ordering so last-minute. If UPS had taken 4 days to transport it, I would have no complaints regarding the order. But UPS did a fantastic job delivering promptly, once they had the package. My issue is that I was told my order was shipped Friday, when it in fact was not shipped until the following Wednesday. This misinformation, combined with the fact that they took twice their promised timeframe to send out the item, is what has made an otherwise great buying experience disappointing.

Again, the product was great. In the future, if I ever am ordering a topper well in advance of when I need it and am not worried about getting accurate shipping information, I would definitely buy from them again. But if I need a company that will ship when they say they will, I will look elsewhere.
